Public smoking bans aren’t going away anytime soon, but if other states and cities started to follow the example of Mobile, Alabama, then at least some common sense can be applied to them. A measure that would have banned all forms of public smoking failed to get enough votes, primarily because of the argument of how it is wrong to force privately owned clubs and businesses to prohibit smoking.
This is something that has been fueling the public smoking debate for a long time. Privately owned clubs and businesses should have the right to allow smoking if they so choose. That’s the whole point of privately owning something, after all. The same regulations that are applied to public places should not be applied to private businesses. This is great news for business owners and smokers alike and hopefully the precedence will be followed by other states and cities.
