European Union Could Ban Cigarette Logos

Hot on the heels of the announcement that Australia would be permanently adopting plain packaging for cigarettes, the European Union is thinking of taking it a step further and banning cigarette brand logos altogether. This is a very unsettling idea for many as it almost makes the point of cigarette brands futile, which may be the idea. The thing that tobacco companies are most concerned about is whether or not such a measure would be adopted here in the states.

Many speculate that a ban of this sort would be an infringement on intellectual property rights. Many are also concerned with the possible violation of the First Amendment should the measure be adopted in the US. The possibility for the US to emulate the decision of other countries is one that could always have serious repercussions and whatever course is taken, it needs to be taken after careful deliberation.
