Smoking bans are hitting America harder than ever, and now college campuses are no exception. While the smoke break has been a staple for college students for a very long time, many college campuses are starting to put the brakes on it. There are a number of reasons for the bans, but perhaps the most commonly cited one is the desire to see the entire community become smoke free.
The problem with this is that the smoke break is a staple for most college students. It is the one opportunity that some of them get to unwind when class gets stressful. However, on the opposite side of that coin is the fact that most young people do not smoke and find cigarette smoke to be very annoying. So if a non smoking student is on break and is surrounded by nothing but smokers, then that can be a very difficult and frustrating spot to be in especially if they are trying to get in a moment of relaxation. Another thing that is very frustrating is that many campuses have not made a decision as to where they stand on e cigarettes. With the growing popularity of great e cigarette starter kits, many students want to know if they can at least use their e cigarettes during break.
It is a tricky tight rope to try and walk. Satisfying the needs of some students over others, however, does not seem to be the way to solve it. A better solution it seems would be to create a designated smoking area that allows for both to be able to get what they need out of their respective breaks. However, given that the majority of places that have smoking bans have not created designated smoking areas this is little more than a dream solution to a problem where it seems people are willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
