Cigarette related crimes are starting to get just a little bit on the ridiculous side. In this latest bit of criminal idiocy, two women in Pennsylvania had attempted to steal less than two hundred dollars’ worth of cigarettes in an attempt to partially pay off a drug debt. They were both arrested on retail theft and drug charges (they had additional narcotics in their possession).
Cigarette crimes of late have been primarily motivated by tax increases, usually in the form of people buying bootlegged cigarettes from obviously disreputable vendors. In fact, it’s safe to say that the majority of cigarette related crimes in general stem from trying to get them tax free. You would think that the high number of cigarette related crimes would, at this point, be easier to prevent especially given the fact that they are only going to get worse.
